The idea of space colonization has become a controversial issue in todays world. While the permanent habitation of humans in space seems "out of this world", no pun intended; it could actually be extremely beneficial to the human race in future years. The main argument in favor of space colonization is it can provide humans refuge in the case of a disaster, whether natural or manmade.
Natural disasters are random and due to chance. What if humans could find a safe haven far away from tsunamis and earthquakes? Natural disasters and climate change has become a more prominent issue in the world today. With the idea of space settlement, this "safe haven" is more than possible. In the event where there was a disaster that had been manmade, such as nuclear warfare, humans would also be able to escape the horrors. Space colonization is the answer to solving these problems.
Imagine the world had became a blood bath overnight. Earthquakes striking, nuclear warfare raging, and you had the opportunity to pack up and move to a place where these disasters could be avoided, would you? Without question I can assume that a large percent of the human race would be interested in colonizing space in order to avoid death.
There are some arguments that claim we have no way of knowing how humans would behave and thrive in environments such as space. While it is true that we don't know how living in these environments long-term can affect humans, it is known that space has a broad amount of resources. The article states that there are enough resources, such as energy and materials, to supply almost over a billion times that of the current Earth population. While the kinks haven't been worked out yet in terms of human civilizations long term survival, these resources that space provides are beneficial and detrimental to space colonization.
There are many points to the argument that space colonization will be favorable to the human race. I agree that settling in space long-term will be beneficial to humans in the future in the event of unplanned disasters. Studies have shown that the world can and might endure drastic situations in the very far future. I believe that space colonization will come to the rescue and has the potential to save billions of humans. Whether the disasters are manmade such as nuclear war, or natural such as climate change, fires, and flooding, it is clear to me that the habitation of humans in space colonies will be the answer to our problems.
