My First Job

Everyone's first job is special to them. Your first job is one of the most important steps in the transition from childhood to adulthood, and I can say for a fact that it taught me many lessons about the real world. My first job was at a local American-style restaurant, which is right down the street from my house, called Blue Ridge Grill. I began working there during the fall of my sophomore year as a support worker, who is someone that is tasked with food running and aiding the kitchen staff. Through the job I began to develop some pretty useful habits to use in my everyday life. These habits included saving money, staying organized, and creating healthy weekly routines. These healthy life skills have helped me succeed in both my school work and actual work. My tendency to hesitate and analyze how/when I use my money is paying off today because I have more spending cash to use without having to worry about getting a job. Working in a crowded restaurant has helped me become a well organized individual when it comes to my workspace and time management. And I try to stick to a regular weekly routine that is modeled after my work schedule these days, so I can optimize my time efficiency. I continued developing these habits for two more years at Blue Ridge Grill until I eventually left for college.

My first job was special to me because it shaped me into who I am today by teaching me the values of commitment, responsibility, and saving. When I first started working I thought there was no way I could possibly work 16 hours a week on my feet, but every week I consistently surprised myself by persevering. Working taught me to own up to my mistakes and accept the repercussions of them head-on. Having a routine paycheck helped me realize that long term investments and goals are needed in life in order to prepare for the future. I honestly don’t think I would be where I am today without having my first job. All those hours of work made me a more independent individual and allowed me to grow into the person I am today.
