Space Colonization

The concept of space colonization, or the transfer of human life from Earth to space, is a widely debated and highly controversial topic. There are numerous arguments both for and against space colonization, with each side of the argument providing solid evidence to support their claims.

The most noteworthy argument in favor of space colonization is to preserve human civilization in the event of a wide scale disaster that could potentially threaten human existence. This disaster could range from climate change to different impact events. Space colonization would be considered a “backup” plan to avoid long term extinction. The argument of space colonization has been supported by many big names, such as Stephen Hawking and even Elon Musk. Another strong argument is that there are vast resources in space, as according to Wikipedia, evidence shows that The Solar System has considerably more energy and materials than Earth could ever provide.

However, the concept of space colonization is disagreed upon by many individuals. Some strong arguments against space colonization include the potential for increased economic inequality, social division, and irreversible harm to the environment. For example, Wikipedia explains that since many of Earth’s natural resources are already sparse and difficult to manufacture, there is a certain risk in using these valuable resources in an attempt to colonize space; It is especially risky since there is only limited information on space colonization, and not a clear end to the idea. Many wonder why Earth’s resources should be used for an idea that might not even work. Other problems present themselves with the idea of space colonization as well. Such issues include radiation from cosmic rays, expensive launch systems, as well as a host of both physical and emotional health problems associated with living in space.

While the idea of space colonization may be relevant in centuries to come, and there is potential with more scientific evidence, space colonization does not seem to be a realistic idea in modern day. It seems very unrealistic to provide materials and energy, transportation, and a large number of technological devices necessary in order to sustain life in an environment outside of planet Earth. Not to mention that these devices are greatly underdeveloped; Furthermore, with limited knowledge of life in space, many do not even know how humans would be able to exist long term in these conditions. Additionally, the costs would be tremendous, and could potentially increase an already present economic gap in civilization. All these reasons support the idea that while space colonization is not necessarily a bad idea, it is not a reasonable concept during this moment of time.
