There are many arguments for and against space colonization, and the most common argument is in favor of human beings living in space. At the moment, there are not any colonies in outer space, and if we were to build them there, there would be a lot of challenges we would have to overcome. However creating colonies on space could be beneficial if there was any time of mass planet destruction. One challenge would be transporting resources such as food, water, energy, transportation, communication, construction materials, and many other things from Earth to outer space because it is very expensive and difficult to send anything from Earth to space. The only way that it would be possible to get the price of transporting materials down would be to further develop and invest in technology that would make the process easier. Even if technology made it possible to lower the cost of transporting, there would still be many challenges that would have to be overcome. Another challenge would be the long term effects of living in space and the risks that go along with it. To this day, there have not been any tests done on how humans are affected by living in space for a long period of time. Something that needs to be developed in order for humans to live in these colonies in space would be a controlled ecological life-support system. The establishment of a controlled ecological life-system is crucial because in order for a human being to survive in space, they must be able to be self sufficient.
Investing in a space colonization would require getting funding from the government which may be very difficult considering the risk associated with it. The risk being, uncertain how this could turn out considering no other human has attempted to do this at this large scale. Another possible risk that may come up is depleting natural resources on Earth in order to get the space colonization up to speed with things on Earth. This could potentially lead to a depletion of natural resources on planet Earth. That could then lead to a potential disaster which could have an impact on all of planet Earth.
While space colonization has potential to be very impactful for human society at this point it does not seem realistic. Due to the fact that there are many things that scientists have yet to discover and test about space colonization. Maybe one day space colonization will become a crucial part of humanity, but at this time in our country it does not seem very likely.
