The topic of space colonization seems intriguing and brings many people to wonder if it would be a good idea or not. Space colonization is the idea to build many colonies on different planets in space, so that we would eventually be able to leave earth and live in those colonies. There are many benefits and downsides to colonizing space, and many argue that it can be used as a back up plan if anything were to happen to earth. This would mean that the human race could continue on and live somewhere else. Despite this, I believe that space colonies shouldn’t be the solution to the issues that could be threatening Earth, and that we should face any problems that we are able to control head on.
One of the most prevalent arguments for space colonization is that it will be used as a backup if anything were to happen to Earth. This seems like a good idea at first, however once you see the cost, the fact that they don't know exactly where to build these colonies, and trying to figure out where 7 billion people are going to go; it now becomes a seemingly impossible task. Yes, it would be great to have somewhere to go if the world were to suddenly end, but the effort that would need to be put into making this happen would be too overwhelming. Instead of trying to find a backup we should be looking for solutions to the problems that are threatening us today.
A major problem Earth is facing right now is global warming. Global warming is a huge threat to the well-being of earth, and its negative effects are already being felt. It is in our best interest to work towards stopping or slowing down this issue, not creating an unrealistic plan to live on some other planet in space, and run away from the problem at hand.
We are already situated on Earth and the fact that we would have to move every single person, instead of working towards making a positive change seems silly. We need to face the issues that we have created for ourselves and not run away from them because eventually the problem will come around again if we never learn from our mistakes.
It would be in our best interest to stay on Earth and fix any issues that we can. There is always the potential of issues like a meteor hitting Earth that we can't control. But who is to say that isn't going to happen in one of the space colonies. This idea is very out there and seems more like a sci-fi movie plot than a real life scenario. Therefore space colonization should not be used as a back-up plan if anything ever happens to Earth. Instead we should face issues like global warming head-on and not run away from the problems that we have created for ourselves.
